Gregg's Blog - Exercise and Body Fat

Right, let’s have a chat about something a lot of people get wrong—losing body fat. Now, loads of us think we can just exercise our way to a slimmer waistline. You know, a bit of running here, a few weights there, and boom—job done, right? Well, not quite. I’m here to tell you, that’s not how it really works.

Yes, exercise is brilliant—it’s good for your heart, your muscles, your mood—but when it comes to shifting body fat? It’s not the main player. The real star of the show is your diet. Fat loss is all about getting into a calorie deficit—which basically means using up more energy than you're putting in. And trust me, it’s way easier to cut back on what’s going in than it is to burn off a load with exercise.

Let’s break it down. Say you go for a 30-minute run—you’re probably burning 300 to 400 calories. Great stuff! But then you treat yourself to a muffin or a fizzy drink afterwards and… well, you’ve basically cancelled that run out. And don’t forget, our bodies are clever—they adapt. So the more you do the same workout, the more efficient your body gets at doing it, and the fewer calories you end up burning. Annoying, I know!

And here’s another thing—exercise can make you hungry. Big session at the gym? You come home ravenous and scoff half the fridge. Sound familiar? That’s your body trying to claw back the energy it’s lost. On top of that, you might find yourself moving around less the rest of the day—fewer steps, more sofa time. So all in all, you’re not burning as much as you think.

Now, don’t get me wrong—exercise does help, absolutely! But it’s your food that really moves the needle. If you want to lose fat, you’ve got to be smart about what’s on your plate. That’s the bit that makes the biggest difference. It’s not about starving yourself, just being consistent and making better choices. Whole foods, smaller portions, less sugar and booze—that sort of thing.

And finally, let’s talk mindset. If you’re hammering the gym every day and not seeing results, it’s easy to get fed up and think, “What’s the point?” That leads to burnout, or worse, chucking it all in. But remember—exercise isn’t punishment for eating! It’s something that should make you feel good, strong, and energised.

So here’s the bottom line—exercise is brilliant, and you should definitely be doing it. But if you’re trying to lose fat, your diet is the main driver. You can’t outrun a bad one, no matter how hard you try. Get the balance right, and you’ll feel better, look better, and—most importantly—be healthier in the long run.
