Gregg's Blog - Moderation

Moderation! This comes up in conversation so many times and I think it’s dangerous!

So many people say to me it’s all about moderation, anything in moderation and it sounds reasonable doesn’t it? The problem is what exactly does that mean?

Moderation only works once you’ve lost weight and become slim. Why? Because by now you have learned what moderation means. You know you could afford to overindulge now and again if you’re good and on plan most of the time. You’ve already discovered what moderation means, you’ve successfully been practising it.

What does moderation mean to somebody that’s overweight? What sort of advice is it if I say to somebody with five stone to lose you need to practice moderation. What do they take from that?

Does that mean they have three takeaways a week instead of four? Does that mean they eat two packets of crisps tonight, instead of three? Does that mean they drink half bottle of rosé wine in the evening instead of a whole bottle?

Do you see the issue here? Anything in moderation simply does not work for anybody that is overweight. That’s not the sort of advice that you can give anybody.  It’s something that has to be learned for ourselves. The way we learn it is by following a plan that works. Realising we can go off plan every now and again and still have the ability to get back on plan and lose weight. That is moderation, not an open piece of advice that somebody is supposed to follow.

Moderation came up again in live conversation on my Instagram one week day morning. I was talking about the importance of healthy meals and how easy it was to prepare healthy meals and a lady said to me but surely there must be some moderation from this.

What on earth did she mean by this? I did ask her but she didn’t answer. I think the reason she asked is she was still under the illusion that making meals for herself must be incredibly hard work. She’s not alone, many overweight people think that making food for themselves is simply going to be too difficult.

It’s not difficult, not in any way, you can make breakfast for yourself in under 10 minutes, lunch for yourself in under 15 minutes, dinner for yourself in under 30 minutes. This is health giving and guarantee weight loss. This is learning to lose weight in a healthy sustainable way, overdo it every now and again confident in the knowledge that you can always go back and lose the weight you may have put on. This is a life of moderation...
