Gregg's Blog - Why Protein Matters When You’re Trying to Eat Healthy

When people decide they want to eat healthier, they often do one of two things straight away: eat salads or try to cut down their portions.

It sounds sensible. Eat less, eat lighter, be “good.” But the problem is, if your meals don’t fill you up, you’ll probably end up hungry not long after — and that’s when the snacking starts.

This is where protein makes a huge difference.

Protein is one of the most important parts of a healthy diet because it helps keep you full. It gives your meals substance. It helps you feel satisfied, not just virtuous for 20 minutes. If all you’ve had is a small salad, a low-calorie lunch, or a tiny portion because you’re trying to be careful, there’s a good chance you’ll be thinking about food again an hour later.

And that’s not because you’ve failed or you’ve got no willpower. It’s because your body is still hungry.

A lot of people think healthy eating means eating less food. But really, it’s about eating better food — food that actually does a job. Protein helps control hunger, supports muscle, and makes it much easier to stay on track without feeling like you’re constantly battling cravings.

That’s why meals built around protein tend to work better. Chicken, eggs, tuna, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, lean meat, tofu, beans — these foods help turn a meal into something satisfying. Then add your veg, your carbs, and other bits around that.

Because let’s be honest — if your healthy lunch leaves you raiding the kitchen an hour later, it wasn’t really that helpful.

This matters even more if you’re trying to lose weight. The more hungry you are, the harder it is to stay consistent. Most people don’t struggle because they’re lazy. They struggle because they’re underfed, hungry, and trying to survive on meals that look healthy but don’t actually satisfy them.

So yes, salads can absolutely be part of healthy eating. Smaller portions can too. But don’t make the mistake of thinking less is always better.

Make your meals work for you.

Start with protein. Build around it. And give yourself a much better chance of staying full, feeling good, and sticking to your goals.
