Gregg's Blog - Weight Loss and Genetics

I’ve been surprised over the years by how many people believe that they are overweight for reasons other than what they eat.

You must’ve heard people say, "well, I’m big boned" or "I’m just a big person" or "my metabolism is different". There’s also the claim that their friends eat far less than they do yet they are the ones that unfortunately put on weight.

A subject that does come up regularly is one of genetics. Many people believe and you may be one of them, that there are certain types of people in the world that are naturally slim... I just want to give you some hard evidence on why what people eat will determine the size and shape they are far, far more than any genes that may have been handed down.

I want to discuss one of the healthiest nations in the world and that is Japan. Japan has undoubtedly some of the healthiest people in the world. That’s because its people consume one of the healthiest diets in the world.

A number of years ago, Japan started to develop an obesity issue so what the government did was put a nutritionist in charge of every school. The nutritionist's job was twofold. To oversee what the children eat at school each day and to oversee a program of food education.

The Japanese are slim and healthy because they eat well and get a good food and nutrition education.

Still not convinced? Let me tell you a story... Five generations ago a number of Japanese families moved to what we now know as Hawaii. These Japanese families embraced the American food culture and they now have exactly the same obesity issue affecting the rest of the USA.

There are a group of people known as Pima Indians that live either side of the border of what is now Mexico and the USA. The Pima people on the Mexican side of the border have type two diabetes and it is just 12% of the population. The same people on the US side of the border have 60% of the population population with type two diabetes.

There we have it ladies and gentlemen, obesity is not about genetics, this has been proved time and time again. For some groups of people they are more inclined to obesity because of the food culture that is passed down to them.

Weight loss and type two diabetes can be reversed for anybody no matter who they are and where they come from by simply adopting a healthy diet.
